Frequently asked questions
I understand the worry and uncertainty that comes when a pet is missing. This is a quick reference designed to address your immediate concerns and provide resources to help you through this experience. The goal being to empower you with information and support to ensure the best possible outcome. These are just a few common pointers, throughout my blog I will dive deeper into different things that you can do.
Where can I find my pet?
Check local animal shelters, use social media to spread the word, post flyers in your neighbourhood, and contact local veterinary clinics. Think of places your cat likes to go to, for example, our cats like horses, so we made contact with local stables. One of our cats loves greenhouses, so contact plant nurseries in your area.
What do I do if I find a pet?
Check for a collar with identification, take the pet to a local vet or shelter to scan for a microchip, and post "found pet" notices online and in your area.
I'll never see my pet again.
While the situation is difficult, many pets are reunited with their owners. Taking immediate action and utilising available resources increases the chances of a happy reunion. Stay hopeful and persistent.
Is it my fault?
It's natural to feel guilty, but focusing on proactive steps is more helpful. Many factors can contribute to a pet getting lost. Prioritise your efforts on searching and seeking assistance.
How do I look for a lost pet?
Start by searching your immediate surroundings, expand your search area, use social media and local lost pet websites, and create and distribute flyers with a photo and contact information. Buddy up with others to help with your search.
Who can I contact to report a missing pet?
Contact local animal shelters, veterinary clinics, and animal control services. Also, report the missing pet on local and national lost pet websites and social media groups. Contact nursing homes, schools or clubs in your area. Speak with local radio and local newspapers.
I'm sad they may be hurt or scared.
It’s understandable to worry about your pet’s well-being. Focus on taking action, which can alleviate some of that anxiety. Reach out for support from friends, family, or pet loss support groups.
I feel guilty for my pet being lost.
Guilt is a common emotion in these situations. Acknowledge your feelings, but redirect your energy toward finding your pet. Remember that you care deeply, and that’s why you're doing everything you can. You did not wake up in the morning with the intention to lose your pet.
